Eat It!
As part of our healthy schools initiative 6-PD have recorded a song called EAT IT! Its a catchy song to the tune of Beat It by Michael Jackson. Its well worth a listen and very catchy.
Rationing
6PD have made radio reports about rationingduring in WW2.
At the beginning of World War II, the UK imported 55 million tons of foodstuffs per year (70%), including more than 50% of its meat, 70% of its cheese and sugar, nearly 80% of fruits and about 90% of cereals and fats. It was one of the principal strategies of the Axis to attack shipping bound for the UK, restricting British industry and potentially starving the nation into submission (see Battle of the Atlantic).
In order to deal with the extreme shortages the Ministry of Food instituted a system of rationing. Each person would register with their local shops, and was provided with a ration book containing coupons. The shopkeeper was then provided with enough food for his or her registered customers. When purchasing goods, the purchaser had to hand over the coupon as well as the money for the purchase.
You can download the podcast here.
Impressionism
Over the past few weeks the children in Year 6 have been looking at Impressionism during their art lessons. They have studied a range of famous art including 'Water Lilies' by Claude Monet and 'Starry Night' by Van Gogh. The children have been experimenting with the 'dabbing' technique used by the impressionist painters and have produced some stunning results. Nothe Fort Visit.
This week Year 6 visited the Nothe Fort in Weymouth to experience what life was like for children during the Second World War (1939 – 1945)

The children dressed up as evacuees and took authentic packed lunches that would have been available in the 1940s. This included everything from jam sandwiches to rock cakes. Some children even wrapped their lunches in brown paper and tied them with string.

During the day the children found out what it was like to go to school, wear a gas mask, use ration / coupon books, be in an air raid and wash clothes using a dolly.

It was a brilliant day that taught us all a great deal. Well done to everyone in Year 6 for making it a fantastic success!

Nothe Fort Trip
As part of their study of the Second World War, it has been arranged for Year 6 to visit the Nothe Fort for 'A Wartime Experience'
6G and half of 6W will visit on Wednesday 7th November
6PD and half of 6W will visit on Friday 9th November
It is hoped that the children will enter into the spirit of the occasion by coming appropriately dressed in a 1940's style. In the past the visit has provided a valuable insight into life for children in 1940. We will be making boxes for gas masks and producing identity cards and labels at school.
The children will need to provide their lunch, but once again, we are hoping that they will bring lunches available during wartime and wrapped appropriately, perhaps in a brown paper bag.
We are requesting that parents/carers make a voluntary contribution of £5.00 towards the cost of the coach and the visit.
Many thanks.
