Dear Parents / Carers,

Did you know that we are now using the SEAL materials?

Don’t worry, we aren’t teaching underwater swimming and how to eat fish! SEAL stands for Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning and it is a fantastic set of materials produced by the DfES especially for use in primary schools.

There are seven units which are covered during the school year, which is roughly one each half term. Each unit begins with a special introductory assembly to the whole school and ends with a celebration assembly when each class or year group shares what they have learned about the theme. Within each unit the materials are colour coded giving activities for each year group so that, although everyone follows the same theme, the work is set at an appropriate age level.

The themes are New beginnings, Say ‘No’ to bullying, Getting on and falling out, Going for goals, Good to be me, Relationships and Changes. This half term we are working on Going for goals.

So, what exactly is SEAL and why have we adopted it?

The materials and activities have been designed to help children to identify both their own feelings and those of others. They learn strategies for coping with anger or difficult situations. SEAL highlights the gifts and talents of each child to raise their self esteem and, as we all know, a happy, confident child will achieve more and so the children are more motivated to learn. Research has consistently shown that children who have used the SEAL materials are more socially aware and that this affects their behaviour very favourably too.

If you would like to view the materials we use you will be pleased to know that they are all available online, just follow the link from the school website. If you do not have internet access then just ask Mrs Sloan if you can see the materials in school and we will happily arrange it.

As you know, your children spend more time at home than they do in school. For this reason the materials include a Gold Set of family activities for each of the themes. These are also available via our school website and we would love you to spend some time browsing these activities and doing some of them with your children to back up the work on each theme as we cover it in school. Again, if you don’t have access to the internet simply contact your class teacher and ask for copies of the materials to be sent home. Very few of the activities require anything more than a little time but we are sure that doing them with your child will bring real benefits to the whole family.

If you would like any further information then please don’t hesitate to speak to Mrs Sloan or Mrs Garland, we really want your support for this as we strongly believe that it will be of real benefit for your child.
