Homework Policy and Guidelines
The Purpose of Homework:
- To support the child in their learning, particularly extending, consolidating and reinforcing skills in literacy and numeracy;
- To assist the development of effective home-school partnerships;
- To encourage pupils, as they get older, to develop the confidence and self-discipline needed to study on their own, and preparing them for the requirements of independent lifelong learning.
The Importance of Reading at Home
- Maintaining regular home reading contributes greatly to the children’s progress in the development of their reading skills. The children will be encouraged to read (either to an adult or, for the more advanced readers, to themselves) for 15 to 20 minutes per evening. Where provided, this should be recorded in their reading record/diary.
The Organisation of Homework:
- As the children progress through he school, they shall experience a gradual increase in the amount and variety of homework, providing them with the opportunity to develop the skills of independent learning.
- The homework schedule for Years 3 will include:
- weekly set spellings and tables/number bond activities in preparation for classroom tests.
- The homework schedule for Years 4, 5 and 6 will include:
- weekly set spellings in preparation for classroom tests;
- a piece of literacy and numeracy work per week.
- Parents/carers will be informed of the homework schedule at the start of the Autumn Term.
- Homework tasks should take no more than 30mins to complete. If they do, parents/carers are advised to stop the activity and are requested to sign the work to confirm that the time limit had been reached.
Home-School-Child Agreement:
Parents/carers will be given the opportunity to declare their support for their child’s homework by signing the home-school-child agreement.
Other issues:
- If a child frequently fails to complete homework tasks, the child’s class teacher will inform his/her parents/carers.
- If a child is experiencing difficulty in completing homework tasks, the parents/carers are encouraged to inform the child’s class teacher.
- When setting homework tasks, due consideration will be given to children with special educational needs.
- The school will provide parents/carers with the opportunity to attend ‘learning’ sessions where they will be advised on how they can support their child in homework tasks.
- The school is at present considering the introduction of an after-school ‘homework club’.
- Parents/Carers of children will have an opportunity to comment on the school’s homework policy on an annual basis through the Parent/Carer Questionnaire. The questionnaire will assist the school management in their review of homework and its effectiveness.
- Children will also be asked to comment on homework through pupil questionnaires and discussions with staff.
