It is essential to have a good grasp of the
workings of modern technology. Wyke Regis Junior School is committed
not just to teaching I.T. but using the latest technology in the
classroom and throughout the curriculum.
Currently we have our very own dedicated
Microsoft qualified technician running and upgrading our network.
Ensuring the smooth running of the considerable IT infrastructure in
the school as well as updating our Website and Intranet. We are
exploring all avenues to provide the most up-to-date and best
value computer based learning. We have a wide variety of educational
software, plus a wide variety of open source software to augment our
network.
We currently have a dedicated suite of 33
computers, plus a computer in every class room. Every class room has
a dedicated interactive Promethean white board and projector. This
is backed up with a large repository of learning material both
software and active lesson applets. Staff are constantly coming up
with new material which is actively shared through our network
We make use of a php scripted Intranet portal
which is constantly updated with information on what is happening
through the school, good work, web based learning tools, galleries
of good work and any activities going on in the school. We have
moved our current website to an advanced server this year so
we can model our main website on the one we currently use within the
school.
Our current client server configuration within
the school is well beyond the standard primary /junior school setup.
Currently we have two domain controllers (servers). One which runs
the network and one which helps and runs other server based
applications. These include the latest version of Squid
proxy server (speeds up our already fast internet connection), a
Microsoft based intranet site with PHP scripting support, and
the windows update service plus it acts as a back up if there is a problem with out main server.
Security and maximum up time is essential and
as such we take the security of the network seriously. All computers
are centrally updated through windows server update service which ensures that all machines in the school have the
latest security updates installed on them within hours of the update
being released by Microsoft. Our anti virus software is updated in a similar fashion.
We have recently completed a full upgrade of the network infrastructure and now use intelligent switches to run our network with a one Gigabit backbone. This has speeded up network and allows us far more flexibility in keeping the network working.
